Getting a work permit in China involves three sequential stages. Your employer handles most of the paperwork, but you need to provide documents and attend in-person appointments.
1
Notification Letter (通知函)
Your employer applies to the local Bureau of Human Resources. This letter authorizes you to apply for a Z visa. Processing: 15–20 working days.
2
Z Visa (Z签证)
You apply at the Chinese embassy/consulate in your home country with the Notification Letter. Processing: 4–7 working days.
3
Work Permit + Residence Permit
After arriving in China: medical exam → work permit card → residence permit. Must be completed within 30 days of entry.
