As of March 2026, the 240-hour transit visa-free policy now covers 86 countries. Eligible travelers can stay up to 10 days when transiting through Shanghai. Check the NIA website for the full country list.

Line 14's western extension is now operational, connecting Pudong to Jiading with 8 new stations. This makes commuting from the northern suburbs much faster. Transfer available at Jing'an Temple and Longhua stations.

Tip: Use Alipay scan-to-pay at all convenience stores

FamilyMart, Lawson, 7-Eleven, and most local convenience stores accept Alipay and WeChat Pay. Even with a foreign card linked, the scan-to-pay works. No need to carry cash for daily snacks and drinks.

Skip the token machines — download Metro Daduhui (大都会) to enter Shanghai metro stations by scanning a QR code. Works with Chinese bank cards or Alipay. Saves time especially during rush hour.

Visa-free entry period extended to 30 days for 38 countries

China has extended the unilateral visa-free entry to 30 days for passport holders from 38 countries including France, Germany, Australia, and more. Previously 15 days. Valid through end of 2025 and expected to continue.

Shanghai winter tip: Indoor heating is rare

Unlike northern China, Shanghai apartments typically don't have central heating. January temperatures drop to 2-5°C indoors without heating. Invest in a good space heater, electric blanket, and thermal layers. The damp cold is no joke.
